“Reinventing the Syllabus” Poster Presentation

At the UW-L Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) Conference on January 21, 2014, I presented a poster entitled Reinventing the Syllabus: From Boring Legal Document to Motivational Pedagogical Tool.

In the poster I discussed and highlighted how I took my standard, four-to-five page cartography syllabus and shrank it down to two, concise pages. I also added more useful information and resources for students. My main achievement in the new syllabi, I think, was to deemphasize all of the legalese that is necessary to include these days. I also designed the syllabus as an indispensable document that students would want and need to return to throughout the semester. Finally, another goal was to have the syllabus act as a marketing tool — if students outside of the class saw it, they would probably ask what it was and who the instructor was.
